How to Store and Handle Bearings Correctly

A bearing can be damaged long before it is ever installed. Poor storage and careless handling cause corrosion, contamination and a subtle wear pattern called false brinelling — so a "new" bearing fitted from the shelf can already be compromised. Treating bearings as the precision components they are, right from goods-in, is one of the cheapest ways to improve reliability.

How to Store Bearings

Do Bearings Have a Shelf Life?

An unlubricated, properly preserved and packaged bearing can be stored for a long time. The limiting factor is usually the grease: greased and sealed-for-life bearings have an effective shelf life because the lubricant ages and can separate or harden over time. As a practical rule, review greased bearings that have been stored for a few years before fitting them, and follow the manufacturer's guidance. This is exactly why first-in, first-out stock rotation is worth the discipline.

How to Handle Bearings

The golden rule is cleanliness. Even very small hard particles are crushed under the contact pressures inside a bearing and indent the surfaces, so dirt introduced during handling becomes wear in service.

Just Before Installation

Keep the bearing wrapped until the shaft and housing are prepared — cleaned, checked for size, and deburred. Then unwrap, fit it with the correct method (press on the right ring, or heat it; never a flame), and lubricate as specified. If a bearing has been in long storage, check the preservative and the grease condition first.

Quick Checklist

  1. Original packaging, unopened until use.
  2. Clean, cool, dry store with stable temperature and low humidity.
  3. Away from vibration; large bearings stored flat.
  4. FIFO stock rotation; review long-stored greased bearings.
  5. Clean hands, tools and bench when handling.
  6. No drops, no fingerprints, no air-spinning.
  7. Shaft and housing cleaned and deburred before fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bearings rust in storage?

Yes. Damp air, condensation from temperature swings, and even fingerprints can start corrosion. Keep bearings in their packaging in a cool, dry, stable store.

How long can bearings be stored?

Unlubricated, well-preserved bearings keep for a long time. Greased and sealed bearings are limited by the grease ageing, so review them after a few years and rotate stock oldest-first.

Why shouldn't you spin a bearing with compressed air?

There's no lubricant film to protect the surfaces, and compressed air can over-speed the bearing and damage it — as well as blow contaminants in.
